BANN EVENING

A slow stillness settles

with a clearness of sky.

Cloud wisps thread a low sun.

The dune sand is cool,

spiked rushes straight

in the still air;

yellow gorse reflecting

the fading bright.

Country train toylike

snakes the quiet fields;

rhythmic shatter – then it is gone.

Passive cattle

in slow munch

swish indolent tails.

Midges hover unperturbed.

Above,

the clear high cry of the curlew.
